YOUTH TRAINING vs. SPORT-SPECIFIC TRAINING

Many parents wonder if starting their younger child with a personal trainer is a worthwhile investment. Well, that depends.

There is a world of difference between training younger kids and older kids, and between training older kids and adults. While my work with the KC Junior Outlaws includes a lot of sport-specific training, I make sure to include a lot of work that involves long-term athletic development.

When working with younger kids (ages 6 to 12 or so) the long term athletic development aspects take center stage, because they it focuses on aspects of their development that will help them throughout their lives. More important than that-- it has to be fun!

To answer the initial question, having a younger child work with a personal trainer is worthwhile only if they are capable of understanding these differences. As a CSCS and a YFS1, I know how to work with individuals of all ages to create a training program that's beneficial and helpful, no matter where that person is--chronologically or developmentally.
